National Poetry Winner for the ScribeWithMe competition for Choice Not Chance
lyrics
Kia Kaha
A father sits with liquid palms,
A mother holds her child in her arms,
A daughter tries to hide her fears,
A son tries to disguise the tears.
Screaming voices crying out,
Neighbours try to block the sound.
They know the torment from next door,
Yet the family woes, they choose to ignore.
It begins as a habit, becomes an addiction,
It swiftly turns and brings destruction,
Brings economies to the ground,
And leaves its victims tightly bound.
The short-lived feeling of control,
The high that quickly brings a low,
These things occur when it takes a life,
A person in need should not be left in strife.
Choice not chance will end this pain.
Love is the answer, let's not bring shame.
Communities, what will you do?
It's time to stop hiding from the truth.
Businesses, can you help our cause?
Politicians, can you wisely make the laws?
The end of destruction is up to our handling,
Let's choose to end harmful gambling.
